Det har nu gått tre veckor sedan en amerikansk polis mördade George Floyd. Under dessa veckor har vi sett en enorm kraft på gator och torg över hela USA i de protester och motståndshandlingar som riktats mot den rådande ordningen. Över hela världen, även här i Sverige, har vi sett enorma demonstrationer till stöd för protesterna i USA men också för att protestera mot rasism och polisvåld här hemma.
George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Eric Garner, Tamir Rice och Oscar Grant är bara toppen på ett isberg av polisbrutalitet och rasistiska mord på afroamerikaner, men motståndet vi bevittnar idag visar att det kommer stå den amerikanska staten dyrt att fortsätta döda sin egen befolkning. Det rasistiska våldet som polisen ägnar sig åt kommer inte längre kunna viftas bort som enskilda olycksfall. Polisen i USA har dessutom gång på gång bevisat demonstranternas poäng genom att bemöta protesterna med brutalt våld. De låter sig inte stoppas av att våldet allt oftare fångas på film och bara eldar på fientligheten mot dem själva och undergräver den lilla legtimitet de haft. Att polisens uppgift i första hand inte är att skydda folket och deras demokratiska rättigheter blir alltmer uppenbart för fler och fler.
Samtidigt som proteströrelsen växer har president Donald Trump gått ut med att han tänker terrorklassa “Antifa”. Även om detta är ett slag i luften då möjligheten att faktiskt göra detta saknas i praktiken, är det ett nytt steg i en utveckling där statens företrädare mer och mer ogenerat använder politiska motståndare som syndabockar för sina egna misslyckanden och som konspiratoriska förklaringar av folkets vrede och motstånd. Det finns två syften med detta, det ena är att öka repressionen mot politiska motståndare och att kunna kriminalisera lokala antirasister, socialistiska organisationer eller helt enkelt svarta människor som tröttnat på att se sina vänner och familj dö. Det andra är att skapa en konflikt mellan de som tror på förändring genom dialog, fredliga protester och lagliga metoder å ena sidan och de som väljer att slå tillbaka mot polisen, skydda varandra från polisvåld och t.ex. bränna ner polisstationer som svar på polisbrutalitet och mord å andra sidan. Detta är en falsk konflikt, oavsett om man väljer att gå en legal väg eller militant väg har vi samma mål och är inte varandras motståndare. De som i ett naivt försök att vinna legitimitet i medias och statens ögon väljer att smutskasta antifascister, aktivister eller vanligt folk som fått nog och agerar våldsamt mot polisen för att värna vår gemensamma säkerhet och värdighet, bidrar till att splittra den rörelse som måste vara enad för att lyckas.
Precis som väntat har Black Lives Matter-rörelsen inte bara utsatts för våldshandlingar från polisen utan också från ideologiskt motiverade fascister. De har dykt upp vid ett flertal tillfällen och provocerat, misshandlat och till och med skjutit demonstranter. Antifascistiska gruppers roll är att identifiera, uppmärksamma och konfrontera dessa grupper och individer för att minska risken för attacker mot folkliga rörelser. Vi som antifascister kommer alltid att stå på de förtryckta folkens sida mot rasism och statligt våld oavsett om det är i Sverige, USA eller någon annanstans i världen och vi kommer alltid göra vad vi kan för att stötta antifascister utomlands mot statlig repression så att de kan fortsätta sitt arbete.

Three weeks have passed since an American cop murdered George Floyd. During these weeks we have wittnessed an enormous power in the streets and squares all across the USA in the protests and acts of resistance that have been aimed at the status quo. All across the world, even here in Sweden, we have seen huge demonstrations in support of the protests in the USA but also to protest racism and police violence here at home.
George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Eric Garner, Tamir Rice and Oscar Grant are just the tip of the iceberg of police brutality and racist murders on african americans, but the resistance we witness today shows that it will come at a high cost for the American state to keep murdering it’s population. The racist violence from the police will no longer be possible to explain as individual incidents. The American police have also, over and over, proven the point of the protests by handling these with brutal violence. They do not let themselves be hindered by the fact that more and more often their actions are caught on video and only fuels the hostility towards themselves and undermines what little legitimacy they had. It becomes obvious to more and more people by the day that the cops do not exist primarily to protect the people or their democratic rights.
While the protests have been growing president Donald Trump has stated that he will label “Antifa” as a terrorist organization. Even if this is empty rhetoric as the actual possibility for him to do so is non-existent, it is a new step along the path of representatives of the state apparatus to use political opponents as scapegoats for their own failures and as conspiratory explanations of popular rage and resistance. This serves two purposes, the first being to increase the repression against political dissidents and to criminalize local anti-racists, leftist organizations or simply black people who are sick and tired of seeing their families and friends being killed. The second purpose is to create a conflict between those who believe in change through dialogue, peaceful protest and legal methods on the one hand and those who choose to fight back against the police, physically protect each other from police violence and destroy precincts as a response to murders on the other hand. This is a false conflict, no matter whether you choose a legalistic way or a militant way we all have the same goals and interests and are not each other’s enemies. Those who naively try to win legitimacy in the eyes of corporate media or the state by smearing Antifa groups, activists or regular people who are fed up to the point where they act violently towards the police to safeguard our common security and dignity, contribute to splintering the movement that must stand united to succeed.
Just as expected the Black Live Matter movement has not been subject to violence from the police, but also from ideologically motivated fascists. They have shown up on several occasions to provoke, assault and even shoot protestors. Antifa groups’ role is to identify, draw attention to and confront these groups and individuals to reduce risk of attacks against popular movements. We, as antifascists, will always be on the side of the oppressed peoples against racism and state violence no matter if it’s in Sweden, the USA or anywhere else in the world and we will always do what we can to support antifascists abroad against state repression so that they can continue to do their work.
